Plot:
Simply Sweetpea is a psychological thriller and dark comedy that tells the story of a woman named Rhiannon Lewis, an office worker who is not charming at all and seems rather bland, although there is something very sick about her: a murderous rage. Borrowing the tired tropes about male dominance over Rhiannon, Rhiannon’s repressed anger makes her take up a ‘sadistic’ alter ego infused with extreme revenge and murder. This series captures the arch of her character’s changes, as it deals with violence and being a part of the society with double standards.
Rhiannon is described as some sort of “coming-of-rage” thriller protagonist, and so, it’s quite obvious,” the story is full of dark humor and horror at the same time because Rhiannon goes through a complete transformation and evolves from being an unnoticeable pole into a dangerously captivating woman.
Cast:
The film “Sweetpea” flaunts an equally able cast with Ella Purnell playing the lead, Rhiannon Lewis. Purnell is famous for her performances in Yellowjackets and Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. She acts out Rhiannon with a certain amount of delicacy yet brings a terrible undertone.
Other cast members include:
- Nicôle Lecky as Julia, Rhiannon’s childhood bully.
- Jon Pointing as Craig, a former employee of Rhiannon’s father.
- Calam Lynch as AJ, one of Rhiannon’s co-workers.
- Leah Harvey as Marina, a junior detective.
- Jeremy Swift as Norman, Rhiannon’s boss.
- Dustin Demri-Burns as Jeff, another co-worker.
- Ingrid Oliver as D.I. Diana St John, a detective inspector investigating Rhiannon’s actions.
- Dino Kelly as Marcus, Julia’s husband
Location & Production:
“Sweatpea” was shot in several parts of the UK and thus retains the dark and spooky feel of the series. It is developed by the same team that worked on Slow Horses and Heartstopper among others.
Genre:
It mixes the characteristics of dark comedy and psychological drama followed by thriller. Its dark originality in dealing with social obligations and standard emotional disturbances, coupled with murder, gives a new twist to a pretty regular story of the genre called “coming-of-rage”.

Pilot Episode:
The pilot revolves around Rhiannon Lewis who plays a receptionist, a position of her life that exasperates her the most. There’s a hint of her being jealous of those who flourish as she contemplates remaining undetected. The pilot gives indications of the fact that Rhiannon has not always been a meek woman by showing that a brutal turn of events would take place as Rhiannon daydreams of becoming a killer.
What to Expect:

Since Sweetpea is the adaptation of the first book in a series there might be further seasons where Rhiannon’s future may also be explored provided the show works for viewers.
